The Fiery Accident
Austin-Travis County EMS reports that they responded to an accident in the eastbound lanes of SH 45 near the intersection with Turnersville Road just before 2 a.m. on Friday. The crash involved a 4-door passenger vehicle and a Toyota Tundra.
The 4-door passenger vehicle was fully engulfed in flames when first responders arrived on the scene. Emergency crews were able to free the driver from the Toyota, and the critically injured patient was transported via STAR Flight to a nearby medical center.
The crash is under investigation by the Department of Public Safety. A DPS spokesperson told reporters that the crash appeared to be a head-on collision, but the agency doesn’t know which way each vehicle was traveling at the time of the crash.
The eastbound lanes of SH45 were closed for several hours, but the highway was fully reopened around 6:30 a.m.
Tips for Safe Driving on the Highway
In 2022, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) reports that there were a total of 1,484 fatal accidents on U.S. and state highways in Texas. That represents more than 36% of all deadly Texas accidents that happened that year. In fact, highways make up by far the largest portion of all deadly crashes compared to other road types with city streets making up the next largest portion at roughly 20%.
This goes to show just how important it is that we all do our part to make Texas highways safer. The next time you drive on the highway, you can follow the tips below to help keep yourself — and everyone else — safe:
- Drive at or below the marked speed limit
- Don’t follow too closely, leave at least 3 seconds of space
- Stay alert and focused
- Stay in the right lane unless passing
- Leave plenty of room for semis
- Use your headlights after sunset
- Never drive under the influence
- Avoid peak-traffic hours
- Avoid distractions
Nothing is worth risking your safety by engaging in risky driving behaviors while on the highway. Remember that your safety should always be your top priority while you’re behind the wheel, and take care while driving on Texas highways.
