Is It Safe to Drive in Austin?

According to reporting from CBS Austin, the Austin Police Department had responded to 40 fatal crashes in the city as of 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 4. That’s one fatal accident roughly every five days. That might have you asking whether or not it’s safe to drive on the road in Austin.

Safety usually isn’t something that is all or nothing. Instead, safety is a question of degrees. In other words, driving is never completely safe, but some places are safer than others. So, how does Austin shape up?

In 2023, Austin ranked thirtieth in the country on the list of the most dangerous cities for drivers. Ahead of Austin, El Paso came in 29th place, Houston came in 22, Fort Worth came in 19th, San Antonio came in 17th, and Dallas came in 9th. That goes to show that while Austin roadways certainly do pose a real danger to drivers, they aren’t as dangerous as several other Texas cities.

Still, you might have noticed that quite a few Texas cities were on that list, and that suggests that Texas itself is more dangerous than other states. In fact, Texas ranks fifth in the country on the list of the most dangerous states for drivers, behind Wyoming in fourth, New Mexico in third, South Carolina in second, and Montana in first.

As you can see, Austin drivers do need to be aware of the potential dangers surrounding them while on the road in their city. Being aware and taking precautions is the best way to avoid being involved in an accident yourself. Still, accidents can happen even when we do everything in our control to prevent them.

If you’ve been involved in a crash in Austin, keep calm and stay in your vehicle unless it is flooding or on fire. Wait for emergency responders to arrive, and gather all contact and insurance information from the other parties involved. Don’t forget to gather evidence and witness information and be sure to contact an attorney for guidance.
