Pedestrian and Driver Safety Tips
Pedestrian accidents have the potential to be incredibly dangerous. The human body often just can’t handle the forces put on it during a collision with a moving vehicle. In comparison, accidents involving multiple vehicles and no pedestrians may be safer thanks to the added protection for those involved. That’s why it’s so important that you do your part to prevent these serious accidents.
You can follow the tips below from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to help keep yourself and others safe.
Driver Safety Tips
- Always watch for pedestrians
- Take extra care when driving in poor visibility
- Follow traffic laws and signs
- Always stop for pedestrians
- Don’t pass at a crosswalk
- Watch for pedestrians crossing at intersections
- Take care when reversing
- Don’t drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol
Pedestrian Safety Tips
- Obey all traffic signs and rules
- Use sidewalks when available
- When no sidewalks are available, walk facing traffic as far from traffic as possible
- Avoid walking near roadways while under the influence of drugs or alcohol
- Use crosswalks or intersections to cross streets
- If no crosswalk or intersection is available, cross at a well-lit, clearly visible spot
- Always look all ways before crossing the street
- Watch for cars entering and exiting driveways
Pedestrian accidents are incredibly serious events, and the danger posed by these accidents needs to be taken just as seriously. Take time to remember the safety tips above, and always use caution when on the road, either as a driver or pedestrian.
